Edward Rowland

Position: Consultant Cardiologist and Medical Director
Location: London, UK

Qualified in medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, London (England) and trained in Cardiology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School/Hammersmith Hospital and The National Heart Hospital. Developed specialist interest in investigation, management and treatment of arrhythmias at Royal Brompton Hospital, St George’s Hospital, and The Heart Hospital (UCLH). Additionally, was Hon Consultant Cardiologist at the Hospital for Sick Children and Visiting Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital. In 2013 appointed Divisional Clinical Director of The Heart Hospital and co-chaired the Clinical Academic Strategy Group established to deliver a new tertiary Cardiovascular Unit (Barts Heart Centre) for London. In 2015 transferred to the Barts Heart Centre (Barts Health NHS Trust) as Consultant Cardiologist and appointed as Medical Director of St Bartholomew’s Hospital (until 2022).

Author or co-author on more than 300 papers. I am a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians, Founding Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, previous President of Heart Rhythm UK (now BHRS), co-editor of the National Service Framework Chapter 8 (Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Death), served as member of the CCAD (Central Cardiac Audit Database) Group and subsequently NICOR (National Institute for Cardiac Outcomes Research), was chair of the Cardiac Devices National Action Group which demonstrated national inequity in device implantation rates and brought together partners to develop the national strategy to address this, served as the lead clinician for the arrhythmia section of the Healthcare for London review of Cardiovascular Services in 2010-11 and received the British Cardiac Society Silver Medal in 2010. In 2023 I was honoured to be appointed OBE for services to Cardiology in the King’s birthday honours list.
