Peter Watkinson

Position: Professor of Intensive Care Medicine
Location: Oxford, UK

Peter Watkinson is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Oxford and an Intensive Care Physician at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. He leads a multidisciplinary research team including clinicians, bioengineers and Human Factors experts. His team is focused on reducing patient risk both before and following critical care. Together they create novel patient monitoring to enhance data capture, and develop large linked healthcare datasets, using these to inform clinical outcomes, generate statistical and machine learning predictive models and underpin large-scale trial design. He takes medical technology and algorithm ideas from concept, through prototype implementation to full-scale trials, and on to clinical implementation and deployment at scale through commercial exploitation. The team has extensively researched the problem of atrial fibrillation around ICU admission. He currently co-leads the PARADISE study which aims to predict AF occurrence following cardiac surgery.
