Dr Malcolm Finlay

Malcolm Finlay

Position: Consultant Electrophysiologist
Location: London UK

Malcolm Finlay is a Consultant Electrophysiologist working at Barts Heart Centre, Queen Mary University of London and UCL. He qualified from Oxford University in Medicine in 2001, and gained his PhD in Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2014 from UCL, for which he held a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship. He specialises in the management of complex arrhythmias, particularly catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and atrial tachycardia, and also in cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

He has a deep interest in the development of new technology and translation. He has invented several medical technologies, including the world’s first online heart simulation for education and training (epicardio.com) and recently has developed “All-Optical Ultrasound”, a new imaging technique suitable for minimally invasive procedures in collaboration with engineering at UCL. This novel platform technology allows high-definition ultrasound imaging via optic fibres, which will be commercialised via a spin-out company. His work in innovation has been recognised by my appointment to the European Heart Rhythm Association Innovations Committee and Scientific Initiatives Committee and he is a faculty member for several national and international academic conferences including Heart Rhythm Congress and the EHRA.

He is a member of the European Heart Rhythm Society Accreditation Committee, which has responsibility for setting international standards for physicians and physiologists in pacing and device therapy. He has published >40 papers in the field of cardiac arrhythmia, including recent works identifying the interplay between mental stress and propensity for abnormal heart rhythms. He continues to be actively involved in research, particularly into the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation and the use of novel technologies in investigation and treatment. Outside of cardiology, his interests include aviation (holding a private pilot’s license), filmmaking (straight8.net) and sports.
