Joseph Mayer

Speaking at: HRC2026

Position: Cardiac Clinical Scientist and Clinical Research Fellow
Location: Stoke On Trent, UK

Joseph Mayer is a Cardiac Clinical Scientist and Clinical Research Fellow at University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). His career began with the Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) and in 2015 he started as a Trainee Cardiac Physiologist at UHNM. After qualifying as a Cardiac Physiologist, Joseph received funding to pursue an MSc in Cardiac Rhythm Management and Electrophysiology at Middlesex University. He subsequently gained accreditation in Cardiac Devices from both the British Heart Rhythm Society (BHRS) and the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE), as well as BHRS accreditation in Electrophysiology. He also achieved Clinical Scientist registration through the Scientific Training Programme (STP) equivalence route.

In 2023, Joseph was awarded an NIHR Pre-doctoral Fellowship, during which he worked closely with UHCW and the Heart Rhythm Research Group at the University of Warwick. This collaboration has led to the publication of several manuscripts focused on optimising and improving ventricular tachycardia (VT) mapping and ablation.

Joseph currently leads the specialist VT clinic at UHCW and began his PhD at the University of Warwick in March 2025. A central aim of the PhD programme is the development and evaluation of both established and novel electrogram metrics to optimise signal annotation and improve substrate identification during electro-anatomical mapping (EAM) of VT. This is in conjunction with experimental work into ablation lesion biophysics and refinement of catheter ablation workflows.
