Jan Marek

Position: Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist

Professor Jan Marek is a consultant paediatric cardiologist with expertise in paediatric and prenatal cardiology and cardiovascular imaging, trained in Prague, Houston, and Toronto. He has been working at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) since 2005 after previous 20-year professional career at University Hospital Motol, Prague, Czech Republic. Jan is currently a lead consultant of echocardiography and prenatal cardiology, and professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at University College London (UCL) and Charles University, Prague.

Jan is a world-renowned expert in echocardiography, cardiovascular imaging and management of children with congenital heart disease (CHD). He contributed to establishing echocardiography departments in Prague, (University Hospital Motol), Munich (Deutsches Herzzentrum) and London (GOSH). He contributed a great deal to establishing nation-wide prenatal screening program in Czechoslovakia in 1985-90. Jan`s research focuses on cardiovascular imaging from fetus to an adult.  Among others, Jan served as a chair of the Paediatric Cardiology WG of the Czech Society of Cardiology, a member of the Council of the Fetal WG (AEPC) and a chair of Imaging WG of the AEPC.

Jan Marek is one of organisers of European, North American and Asian educational programs including European accreditation course in Echocardiography and serves as national examiner for accreditation in echocardiography under ESC/EACVI.  In 2018, Professor Marek was awarded by Honorary Silver Jan Masaryk medal by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for outstanding contribution to the development of relations between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
