Janice Bailey

Position: Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist
Location: Taunton, UK

Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset

Alongside a colleague we have developed the Arrhythmia Nurse Service in Somerset.

This includes developing a Sudden Cardiac Death Pathway, enhanced support for families and organising family screening. This service has been running for over 10 years.

We also support patients with complex cardiac devices; we run a helpline, newsletter and support group for patients with ICD’s as well as a pre device clinic and a post implant collaborative clinic with cardiac physiologists along with the Deactivation of ICD at End of Life Pathway.

My MSc focused on Inherited Cardiac Conditions , Genetics and supporting patients and families,   including developing nurse led Ajmaline Challenges, diagnostic genetic testing within Cardiology and the Somerset Sudden Cardiac Death Pathway.

I was involved in the recruitment and consent of patients for the 100,000 genome project and am involved in the legacy work. I also work as a Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor. I am developing the service as an ICC centre, helping the mainstreaming of genetic testing within cardiology and actively educating the clinical team, supporting them to identify appropriate patients as well as running the ICC MDT and ICC clinics.

We have set up and run a rolling education programme for Arrhythmia  for the MDT team, both in the acute and community Trust and teach  yearly at the local hospice, on the Heart Failure Service Study Days and on the Somerset LMC (Local Medical Committee) nurse update days.
