Currently a Programme Director at Public Health England, Jenifer Smith worked in clinical medicine prior to training in public health medicine to pursue her interests in evidence based healthcare. After approximately 10 years as Director of the Cancer Intelligence Service and Quality Assurance Director for Breast Screening across the South West of England, she moved to the Commission for Health Improvement where she was responsible for commissioning the National Clinical Audit Programme, and providing clinical advice on the measurement of quality in healthcare services. Since then she has held various senior posts in public health medicine, including Director of Public Health and Chief Medical Adviser for the Isle of Wight, where she worked with colleagues from the London School of Economics and Political Science to develop multi-criteria decision analysis as a tool to support commissioners of healthcare in prioritising resource utilisation.
Her current role encompasses leading the Public Health England support to the NHS in diabetes prevention, treatment and care; contributing senior leadership to the cardiovascular prevention programme; and determining commissioning policy for specialised healthcare services.
Publications cover cancer epidemiology, outcome from colorectal cancer treatment and multi-criteria decision analysis in healthcare.
