Derek Rowlands qualified in medicine in Manchester, having taken an intercalated B.Sc. in Physiology part way through the medical course. He spent two and a half years at Hammersmith Hospital and one year at the Mayo clinic, before being appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

He has a long standing interest in the teaching of ECG interpretation, which he feels to be a much neglected process in all areas of medical practice. He has given more than 60 3-day courses in ECG interpretation in the UK and has spoken on the topic by invitation in South Africa, Italy and Holland.
