Fred Kusumoto

Position: Professor of Medicine

Dr. Kusumoto is Director Heart Rhythm Services Mayo Clinic Florida and Professor and Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs for the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He has written five books on cardiac pathophysiology and cardiac devices, including texts that have been translated into Spanish, Chinese and Portuguese. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed articles in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Circulation, and Heart Rhythm.  His research interests include evaluation of quality of life and healthcare outcomes with electrophysiology procedures, particularly in the elderly and use of implantable cardiac devices. He has received several awards for teaching excellence, and has chaired HRS’s Health Policy Committee, among others and is the Chair-elect for the ACC Scientific Publications Committee.  He has served as Governor of the Florida Chapter ACC and is the current HRS president and Co-Chair of the ACC-Asia conference.  He served as the Chair for several societal documents including the 2018 ACC/AHA/HRS Bradycardia and Conduction Disorders Guideline, the 2017 ACC/AHA/HRS Sudden Cardiac Death and Ventricular Arrhythmias Guideline Evidence Review Committee, the 2017 HRS Expert Consensus Statement on Lead Management and Extraction, and the 2014 HRS/ACC/AHA Expert Consensus Statement Use of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Therapy in Patients Who Are Not Included or Not Well Represented in Clinical Trials.  After receiving his medical degree from University of California San Diego Medical School, he completed his training at the University of California, San Francisco.
